Skirling House - News

Winter 2012

Into our closed period when the house is completely turned upside down as Helen and Jillian get stuck into the deep clean and Davey makes sure that the paintwork is all up to scratch.   Talking about scratches, this is also the time of year to organise French polishing the tables and re-enamelling the big old bath in Carmichael.   Our polytunnel also needs a new cover, a victim of the high winds we have been suffering, and some garden fencing and 2 gates need replaced.    And I thought we had very little to do this year!

We are going to fit in a few days in Paris however which will be a treat, hopefully some good meals and there are usually worthwhile exhibitions.   We are looking forward to  a break, business held up well last year despite all of the gloom in the newspapers and we were happy to welcome back lots of our regular visitors, friends really.

And then at Christmas it was Bob’s 60th birthday on Christmas Eve so our regular drinks party was very busy, although we did have it catered this year, which meant poor Bob was spared spending the whole day preparing food.  New Year’s Day was my mother’s 90th birthday so we had a lunch party with 45 guests for that momentous occasion.  It was a very happy event with old friends from Edinburgh, family, her Skirling friends and our regular New Year hotel guests all joining in.

Sadly Mike is no longer fit to look after the garden and handyman jobs for us, we miss him after the ten years he was with us.   Jak has recently taken over a lot of the work, keeping the log baskets filled, the grass cut and the chickens looked after.   After a summer without anyone to help out we are very grateful.  We also now have Lynda helping in the garden, specialising in fruit and vegetables and the polytunnel, so look our for lots of excellent home-grown produce next year – weather allowing!

Jillian now helps in the house alongside Helen.   She is doing her MVQ in housekeeping, I am not sure who is learning most Jillian or her course supervisor.   Jillian is also a computer whizz so we are hoping she will be able to help us to keep this site updated rather more regularly than it has been in the past.
